Why music for addiction?
When quitting an addiction, it’s important that you keep your head in the game. What better way to do that than with a healing playlist of Christian music?
Overcoming addiction isn’t easy. Unfortunately, even the most well-meaning person can fall off the wagon if they aren’t careful. That’s why it’s important that we avoid common mistakes in our recovery process, and instead be sure to prepare our mind, body, and spirit with the right tools to find victory over our addictions.
Think of your music playlist as one of the tools in your recovery toolbox— by selecting the right songs, you can keep your spirit and heart in the right place on a daily basis.

Best Christian songs for addiction
Below are some of my favorite songs for music for addiction and recovery.
Many of these songs are what some would consider “edgy” in Christian music. I like that. Because honestly, when you’re fighting an addiction, life can get pretty heavy. These songs are a beautiful representation of that, and the beauty that comes from being redeemed through Christ.
You’ll notice that I have a few songs from Jeremy Camp on here. That’s because I’m not only a fan (guilty!), but also because I find that the lyrics to many of his songs really hit home when it comes to addiction, trials, and suffering. Maybe that’s because he’s experienced many trials himself, including his testimony depicted in the movie, I Still Believe (affiliate).
You can add any (or all) of these songs to your own personal Spotify playlist. Please note that I’ve included some stand out lyrics below each song, bold emphasis mine.
Redeemed, by Big Daddy Weave
If nothing else, this song sums up addiction right here. The focus on that our struggle (whatever that may be) has already been won is encouraging.
Memorable lyrics: Seems like all I could see was the struggle Haunted by ghosts that lived in my past Bound up in shackles of all my failures Wondering how long is this gonna last Then you look at this prisoner and say to me "Son, stop fighting a fight, its already been won" I am redeemed, You set me free So I'll shake off these heavy chains Wipe away every stain That I'm not who I used to be I am redeemed, I'm redeemed
One Day at a Time, by Jeremy Camp
The phrase “one day at a time” is something you hear in recovery groups, but this song also embraces that we must walk in faith one day at a time. Each of us has our own struggle, and it will look different for each person, but we all can take it step by step. The trials can make us stronger and we can actually feel closer to the Lord during those dark moments.
Memorable lyrics: Well I've been burned out broken torn out torn down In ways I never knew I would I can feel your fullness in my life One day at a time I will take these words you've given me One day at a time I will rest in knowing you One day at a time I will share this gift you've given me One day at a time I will walk these valleys through
Count ‘Em, by Brandon Lake
This is such a powerful song that can get me lifted, for sure. It reminds me of the great and wonderful things the Lord is doing every single day. How many lives He’s touched and changed– we can’t count ’em. He is Holy and He is worthy of praise!
Memorable lyrics: How many enemies ended on bended knees Swallowed up in defeat? Can't count 'em How many raging seas opened in front of me? How many victories? Can't count 'em How many prophecies no one would dare believe Now it's reality? Can't count 'em How many broken men given a second chance See all the lifted hands? Can't count 'em
Steady Me, by Jeremy Camp
I like to listen to this song when I’m feeling out of balance in my life. It reminds me that no matter how much pain I’m in, the Lord is going to steady me. He never promised I wouldn’t feel pain, but He promised He would be with me when I did. No matter what life throws at me, I’m standing on the solid rock.
Memorable lyrics: Even when the ground I'm standing on begins to shake You set my feet, You steady me Even when my heart feels like it's tossed among the waves You won't skip a beat, You steady me
Grave Robber, by Crowder
I enjoy this song because it is a testimony for what Jesus did for us– He conquered death so that we would not be dead to sin. We are alive through the power and sacrifice of Christ. He will pick us up from our rock bottom, and He will give us a new life!
Memorable lyrics: I got stolen by the grave robber Picked me up from that rock bottom Washed my soul in that holy water Brought me back to life (Brought me back to lifе) One more stone rollеd away One more sinner been saved by grace This dead man, he ain't dead no longer All because of that grave robber
Hero, by Skillet
Skillet has a lot of great Christian rock songs, and this is one of my favorites. Instead of relying on self, this song is pointing to the real hero: Christ. Because we do need a hero to save us from ourselves, and that hero can only be Jesus.
Memorable lyrics: Who's gonna fight for what's right, who's gonna help us survive? We're in the fight of our lives And we're not ready to die! Who's gonna fight for the weak, who's gonna make 'em believe? I've got a hero I've got a hero! Livin' in me! I've gotta fight for what's right, today I'm speakin' my mind And if it kills me tonight I will be ready to die! A hero's not afraid to give his life A hero's gonna save me just in time!
I Know, by Big Daddy Weave
This is one of my favorite Christian songs. I love the focus on Philippians 1:21, “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
One element I really enjoy is the bridge (where it says “on my darkest day, from my deepest pain”). The song feels like it just sits there; you kind of start wondering how many times they are going to repeat. However, that’s the beauty of it– it accurately portrays the feeling of just lingering in pain for what feels like forever. But then the song builds and the ending chorus comes in so much stronger: I know.
Memorable lyrics: I know that You are good I know that You are kind I know that You are so much more Than what I leave behind I know that I am loved I know that I am safe 'Cause even in the fire to live is Christ, to die is gain I know that You are good, mmm You are good, I know On my darkest day, from my deepest pain Through it all, my heart will choose to sing Your praise
No Rain, by Jeremy Camp
No rain stresses the point that if we don’t go through hard times (the rain) that we will never truly experience real growth. It gives purpose to the pain: to grow closer to our Lord and learn to walk by faith.
Memorable lyrics: How's a garden ever supposed to grow If there ain't no rain, there ain't no rain How am I gonna ever learn how to feel If there ain't no pain, there ain't no pain If I never fall If I never break How can my heart change How's a garden ever supposed to grow if there ain't no rain? No rain
Graves (acoustic), by KB and Brandon Lake
Christian rap is very much needed, and KB pulls it off magnificently. I particularly like this duet between KB and Brandon Lake, the acoustic version. While he mentions that a “dead man brought me back to life,” we can understand that our Savior is alive– while we were dead to sin He made the ultimate sacrifice. He conquered death, and He can conquer our deaths too.
Memorable lyrics: Yeah, can't get enough of this Spirit's upon it, He rippin' and runnin' The drugs get to flushin', the tears get to floodin' The old me is dyin' and never recoverin' Only You turn mistakes into miracles Only You make broken stories beautiful If anything is possible, to rise again Come and make these dead bones live
Take My Life, by Jeremy Camp
This is probably the heaviest song I’ve heard from Jeremy Camp, and I love it. The imagery of just giving EVERYTHING, your entire life, to the Lord is both inspiring and edifying. Truly, when we suffer from addiction, we have to recognize that we can only beat this by giving everything to the Lord. To “take my life” and let His will be done in our lives.
Memorable lyrics: Here I am before You now Like a child I'm reaching out Here I am I'm giving all I can Breaking my pride I feel I'm through Shattered inside I run to You And now I give it all to You Take my life, Take my mind Take my soul take my will I am yours now, and I give it all to You
Devil, by Anne Wilson
Anne Wilson has taken the Christian music scene by storm, and in this song she delivers BIG. When you feel like the devil is pushing down on you and your having spiritual attacks, listen to this song. The devil thought wrong! You can conquer this addiction because Jesus already did!
Memorable lyrics: Devil still lying and accusing me Trying to drag down what has been redeemed But I'll stand my ground, stare into his face And fight back with the power in Jesus' name, Jesus' name You came rising right out of that grave My sin went running and my soul got saved Son of God's always been a bit of a rebel You brought life to me and death to the devil
Getting Started, by Jeremy Camp
This song is for the brokenhearted. It is a powerful statement that reminds us that the old is redeemed. If we trust in the Lord, He will wash us clean and make us new. For those of us that have struggled with addiction, are new to Christ, and workign hard to give it all to Him, this song is for you.
Our journey is only just begun.
Memorable lyrics: If you only knew the treasure that you really are If you could understand the measure of the Father's heart He loves you, He loves you, He loves you Fall in His arms and let Him wash you clean He'll tear off the chains so that you can be free A new life begins and the old is redeemed Oh, I believe, yeah
