Story: Write31Days

Story - What's Yours?“Story” is the first prompt of the Five Minute Free Writes for #write31days. How appropriate.

Broken to blessed is the story of my redemption and recovery.

Once upon a time, I was a lost, scared and very confused teenager/young adult. By the time I was 22, I started settling into life. Finding myself. At 25, I met my first husband and we got married and I became an instant mom to three teenagers. We added two more kids to the mix. I was a typical suburban mom. Didn’t need the Lord, life was going along just fine, thankyouverymuch.

When I was 32, married not quite five years, and with five kids, my husband had a massive heart attack. The next year he had a second one and was disabled. Suddenly, I was wife/mom/full-time caregiver and a business owner because his income was cut by 60%.

Still couldn’t find room and time and space for God.

(Yes, I was stupid.)

In 2007, my life crashed. I realized I had built it on nothing permanent.

I began the journey back to God.

In 2008, I jumped wholeheartedly back into His arms. See, He was always there. I was the one who had moved.

I was widowed in 2010, remarried in 2014.

Life has moved on.

But always, always, with our Lord in my story.

There’s much more to share! Five minutes just won’t do.

I hope that you will visit again.

“This is my story. This is my song. Praising my Savior all the day long.” –  lyrics were written in 1873 by blind hymn writer Fanny Crosby. Doesn’t get more appropriate for my story than that!

I hope you’ll join me on my journey through my story so that you can see all the incredible ways God has been faithful to show up and work in my life — even in the times when I was not faithful.

  1. You are not alone. It seems a lot of us think we can handle things ourselves until we get into trouble. Then we ask the Lord to help. HE is always there for us and all we have to do is ask.! A lot of us have experienced this and we have to learn the hard. God Bless you! I enjoy your writing. Hugs Jan

  2. Thank you for sharing this glimpse into your story, Shelby! I’m so sorry for the many trials you’ve experienced. Praise God for His faithfulness even in the midst of great hardship! Thrilled to have you participating in the challenge!

    • Thank you Kate! I’m so grateful for what you do with FMF and for these prompts. I honestly didn’t know where I was going to go with this and then this morning, as I was looking at the list, God just spoke into my heart. It’s all about the story.

  3. 10 years of faithfully following God must have a lot of stories. Hurray.
This will be an encouraging series not only because of your victories but also because of your straying. I can RELATE to both.

    • Thank you, Tracy! I’m looking forward to doing more writing and having a reason to pretty up my personal corner of the web.

  4. Shelby, what a beautiful story! I love the reminder that even when we are not focusing on the Lord, He isn’t part of our story. Thanks so much for the reminder.

  5. Yes the word is my story. I have been through really a lot of things to. I need to start writing about it. Thank you for open my heart to see this and putting me on this journey to accomplish this task in my life.
